Background
Geoff Chalmers graduated in 2004 with a BA(Hons) in Jazz Studies from Leeds College of Music, where he studied jazz bass guitar with Zoltan Dekany. From 2008-10 he was a full time student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, graduating with a Post Graduate Diploma in classical double bass performance. His teachers were Roberto Carillio-Garcia (Principal bassist with the Halle) and Jirji Hudec (Principal bassist with the Czech Philharmonic). Whilst at the RNCM he was recipient of the 2009/10 Martin Edwards Jazz Bursary and the Rega Heesom Award.
Geoff has also studied jazz bass with Richard Hammond, Gary Jackson, Scott Devine and Steve Berry. He studied classical double bass with Leon Bosch, Bozo Paradzik, Paul Miller and Gjorgji Cincievski .
Professional work
Based in Leeds he has played numerous gigs/concerts/recording sessions and shows throughout the UK and abroad. As the regular bassist for the ‘Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular’ show from 2004-2009 he toured the UK, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Spain. He also played double bass in the 2010 ‘Vienna Proms - A Summer Night’s Concert’ tour. TV perfomances include ITV’s ‘This Morning’ show whilst backing singer Ray Quinn.
As a bass guitarist Geoff plays with function bands throughout the UK, and also for P&O show bands. He has played bass guitar in concerts with the Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. In March 2012 he played double bass and bass guitar for Opera North education department’s tour of the chamber opera, Cautionary Tales.
He is also much in demand as a jazz double bassist working in small groups and big bands. He has performed with Alan Barnes, Brandon Allen, Stuart MacDonald, Dennis Rollins, Pee Wee Ellis, Gary Boyle, Pat McCarthy and other leading jazz artists.
